Ayoub El Kaabi's Spectacular Strike Secures Morocco's Win Against the Coelacanths in Africa Cup of Nations Opening Match.

Host nation the Moroccan side shook off a nervy beginning to defeat their island opponents in the competition's first match on the weekend, with goals from Brahim Díaz and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.

This constituted a less than dominant display, though, from the highly fancied hosts, who are ranked 97 places above the small island nation in the world rankings and had to toil hard for the three points in rainy conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Tense Start and Missed Chances

The hosts missed an early penalty and were goalless at the interval despite controlling possession, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute of the second half.

The goal came when full-back Mazraoui did well to prevent the ball from going out before slipping it across for Díaz to sidefoot home.

Every opening game is invariably tough but we improved in the second half,” said Morocco coach Walid Regragui.

The Substitute's Moment of Magic

The tension was subsequently calmed by a piece of sheer genius from substitute El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes after his introduction, the forward met a ball into the box with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the win.

Before that, the Moroccan team could have been ahead in the 11th minute when a penalty was given for a foul on Brahim Díaz. However, Rahimi's effort was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.

Comoros Resistance and Second-Half Opportunity

The underdogs stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods until the hosts' superior firepower in the end told.

Shot-stopper Pandor pulled off a number of other fine saves to limit the scoreline as the game wore on, even though his team created a chance for an equalizer shortly after Díaz's goal, with Rafiki Saïd firing straight at keeper Bounou.

Injury Worry for Hosts

The victory was partially marred by an apparent injury to Morocco's captain, Saïss, who was forced off after the 18th minute in some distress.

The centre-back had just returned to the national side last month following a lengthy absence due to ankle surgery.

This result continues Morocco's historic run of consecutive wins to 19, beating the previous best of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
