Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
